Couples who are currently in civil partnerships can now convert them to marriages for free.

Kirklees Council is offering the service to couples who entered civil partnerships before 26 March 2014 to convert them into a marriage for free.

It will give couples a marriage certificate, which will be treated as existing from the date of the original civil partnership.

Couples in a civil partnership will have the option to convert it into a marriage for free, or with a ceremony at a venue of their choice, including some religious premises registered for marriages of same-sex couples for a fee.

The free conversion offer runs until December 2015, after which a small fee will be charged.
