1 . He’s been a Councillor for a long time

Cllr Paul Kane is 58 years old and has been a Councillor for the Dewsbury East Ward for the past 20 years.

2. Dewsbury born and bred

Cllr Kane – the youngest of 11 children who was born and brought up in Chickenley, Dewsbury, where he has lived all his life.

“I am proud of my upbringing and believe that through hard work and commitment most people can achieve recognition. I humbly thank my group for this honour they have bestowed upon me and also think this is an honour for my home town of Dewsbury.”

3. He’s something of an expert in construction

Paul started his construction career at Dewsbury Council Public Works Department in the building trade.

He recently left his full time role as a Technical Contracts Manager for a local Housing Association, to concentrate on his Civic duty of Mayor. He worked there for over 21 years in various positions including a Construction Clerk of Works and Surveyor.

4. He’s a family man

Paul,  has 2 sons, Michael and James. The Mayoress for the coming year will be Susan Bedford, Paul’s partner of 10 years. Susan also has 2 sons, Adam and Matt. She is a qualified accountant and for the past 20 years has worked as a Finance Manager within a variety of organisations including education, charity and various not-for-profit organisations.

5.  He is supporting Diabetes UK

He has chosen Diabetes UK as his charity for the year, saying:

“This illness in Kirklees is bordering on epidemic – it is a scourge and causes tremendous problems in families, careers and lifestyles.

“But it can be prevented in 95% of cases by good diet and exercise.”

He also says that all the money raised in Kirklees during his mayoral year will be spent locally.

6. He wants to work closely with local businesses

Cllr Paul Kane said he looked forward to his year in office, when he promised to increase the council’s engagement with businesses to help the district thrive.

“My intention is to engage closely with businesses, providing feedback and forward on how the council and the businesses can mutually benefit – we are at a turning point.”

His Deputy Mayor will be Cllr Jim Dodds. Cllr Dodds, ward member for Denby Dale, will be supported by his Deputy Mayoress and wife of 49 years Carol.
