More powers – leader puts case to Government Minister

more powers - Sheard has his say

Kirklees Council leader Cllr David Sheard has met with the local government minister to put the case for delivering more powers to Yorkshire.

Cllr Sheard met with Greg Clark the day after the Budget statement which promised “significant additional powers” could be handed over to the Leeds City Region area.

Cllr Sheard said:

“We will continue to collaborate, and work with Leeds, and our West Yorkshire and wider partners, in their negotiations with the Chancellor. Our priority is to get the best devolution deal we can for people in Kirklees and across the region. The Chancellor has much to deliver on – he has raised expectations of a Northern Powerhouse and now must deliver.”

In the Budget, Chancellor George Osborne said:

“The government is working towards further devolution deals with the Sheffield City Region, Liverpool City Region, and Leeds, West Yorkshire and partner authorities, to be agreed in parallel to the Spending Review.”

  • We would be worse off if we got devolution with Kirklees, the only area they spend any money is in Huddersfield. Nothing gets allocated to Spenbourgh all money goes to the treacle tower i.e. Huddersfield where it sticks there.
