Business Lecture Series starts in Dewsbury
Leading businesses joined Cllr Paul Kane, Mayor of Kirklees at Dewsbury Town Hall for the first in a series of Business Lectures he is hosting during his Mayoral year.
Cllr Kane spoke to his guests about his ambitions for his year in office, and his desire to build effective relationships between the Mayor and local businesses which are mutually beneficial.
He then introduced Larry Hirst, the Dewsbury-born international business leader and former Chairman of IBM Europe.
Mr Hirst, spoke about the career which transformed him from Dewsbury lad, to head one of the largest international corporations in the world, and shared important lessons learned from over 40 years in business. He also gave his take on what the future holds for business.
Mr Hirst said:
“I was delighted to accept Paul’s kind invitation. It’s always good to be back in my hometown, particularly when there’s an opportunity to meet and share experiences with like-minded individuals.”
Nazura Mutvalli of the Orchid Banqueting Suite commented:
“It was great to hear Larry Hirst talk about his success and how proud he is to come from Dewsbury.”
Speaking about the success of the event Cllr Kane said:
“I’m extremely grateful to Larry for giving up his time to be at today’s business lecture. In my years as a ward councillor, I’ve often heard from businesses that we could do more to support local companies, and judging from the turnout today, I think that we’ve achieved that. Being able to host an event such as this, and to give local business people the opportunity to hear from and question someone of Larry’s professional standing and experience is incredibly valuable. I’m looking forward to the following events later in the year.”
The event was the first in a series of business lectures which the Mayor will be hosting over the next 12 months. The next business lecture is scheduled for 16 September in Huddersfield, and features University of Huddersfield Vice-Chancellor Bob Cryan as guest speaker.
