Since we agreed to welcome a number of refugees to the area, many people have asked how they can help. The work of the following organisations will support refugees from around the world not just from Syria – here is a quick guide to getting involved:

Local support

We are fortunate in Kirklees to have an existing voluntary and community network that provides invaluable support to  asylum seekers and refugees living in Kirklees. If you know of local voluntary and community sector groups that currently do not work directly with refugees in Kirklees but want to become actively involved please ask them to email:

Bill.Dennis@migrationyorkshire.org.uk.

The groups involved in the network have a wealth of knowledge and experience in supporting refugees and would be able to advise on the best way to become involved locally.

I want to volunteer to help refugees

Several charities and organisations are working with refugees across the UK. To find out more about volunteering opportunities in your area visit:

I just want to do something to help

There are a number of charities and organisations across the UK that are raising awareness and donations to help refugees who have recently arrived and those who are already in the UK. You can contact these charities and organisations directly.

I have clothes, books and toys that I want to donate

Many charities have been inundated with generous offers of donated goods from members of the public. Because of the logistical challenges in storing and transporting donated items, some can’t currently accept any donations.

Items can however be donated to One Good Turn who will support any refugees and asylum seekers in Kirklees and make sure they get what they need.

You can also donate items to Save the Children charity shops. The items won’t go directly to child refugees but the money raised will help to support them.

I want to donate food, toiletries and household items

You can take your donations to The Welcome Centre, they will be helping asylum seekers and refugees alongside the other work they do to help local people in need get back on their feet.

I want to help refugees overseas

You can support Save the Children’s Child Refugee Crisis Appeal. Their teams are working across Europe and in the countries refugees are fleeing from to provide aid and support.

You can support UNHCR’s emergency appeal for the refugee crisis in Europe. UNHCR is on the ground providing life-saving support to refugees arriving in Europe.
