Black History Month Celebrations in Kirklees
We are supporting Black History Month this October with a series of events that celebrate African and Caribbean culture and heritage.
These events have been organised in partnership with the Black History Month Steering Group – which represents groups and individuals from, or with an interest in the African and Caribbean communities.
The activities begin with a blessing at Nelson Mandela Corner in Huddersfield on Saturday 3 October at 12 noon, followed by the official launch at Huddersfield Town hall at 6.30pm
The launch event will be an evening of cultural celebrations featuring live performances from local dancer Garry Benjamin, spoken words poets Coral Pearce and Den Dixon, Gospel Singer Kieron Bygrave and special guest local reggae sensation – Adele Harley.
There will also be a fashion show featuring the latest collections from designers Iroquois Pliskin, HIFE Clothing, Rachel Baptiste, Brushed Culture Clothing & Photography and Uwase Marjorie who has travelled all the way from Uganda.
Dominoes Hair Designers will be giving demonstrations on how to take care of African hair.
There are lots of other events taking place during the week including theatre productions, museum exhibitions, special cycle rides, and cultural evenings.
