Huddersfield lights switch on

The festive season officially begins in Huddersfield this week with the Christmas Lights Switch On, on Saturday 14 November.

Paul Foster and the Pulse1 Roadshow will be live on stage throughout the event, entertaining the crowds with games, music and introducing singers and dancers from 4.45pm.

Taking place on the Piazza, this year the Christmas lights will be switched on at 6.10pm by Joe and Andy, as seen on CBeebies ”The Rhyme Rocket.”

Special guest, Huddersfield’s Town Crier Vic Watson, will bring an extra special festive atmosphere to the event. Also bringing fun to the event will be Huddersfield Town’s popular mascot Terry the Terrier.

This year’s switch on is once again sponsored by Kirklees College and the Lawrence Batley Theatre.

Victoria Firth, Director of the Lawrence Batley Theatre, said

We are really pleased to be playing a key part in this year’s switch on, once again. To me, the Christmas Light Switch On has always signified the start of the festive season – it really captures the warm spirit of Huddersfield.”

Melanie Brooke, Vice Principal at Kirklees College, said

Last year’s event was a huge success and we’re delighted to be supporting the event again this year. It’s fantastic that Joe and Andy, from CBeebies ”The Rhyme Rocket” are coming to Huddersfield to do the official switch on, we know that they’re popular with families. I’m pleased that the college will be part of this exciting community event once more.”

Cllr Peter McBride, our cabinet member for investment and regeneration said;

The Christmas Light Switch On, for most people, signals the start of Christmas in Huddersfield. Last year’s switch on was a huge success, drawing more people than ever into the town centre. This year will be even better. We’re delighted to be working once again with Kirklees College and the Lawrence Batley Theatre on the event. We have an impressive line up of special guests and entertainers this year – there’s something for everyone. The warm atmosphere and entertainment from local talent will remind everyone why Kirklees is such a great place to live.”
