Our 4th annual Kirklees World Book Day Quiz took place at Cleckheaton Town Hall on 2 March 2016. 34 teams of Year 5, 6 and 7 pupils from 26 local schools took part in an afternoon of excitement and reading fun. Popular poet and storyteller Conrad Burdekin was the guest quizmaster and entertained teams parents and school staff between rounds.

This year’s quiz winners…

Questions were based on a reading list of twenty books, ranging from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to David Walliams’s novel ‘Awful Auntie’. When the dust settled, after six quiz rounds and a tense tie-break for second and third places, the overall winner was Birkby Junior School, who retain the trophy they won in 2015. Rowley Lane Junior Infant and Nursery School and Headfield Junior School placed second and third, respectively.

All mini-quizzers represented their schools with pride. A special mention goes to Newsome Junior School and Scissett Middle School, whose teams came so close to placing in the top three.

Quiz organisers at our Schools Library Service – booksplus, are already planning ahead for the 5th annual World Book Day Quiz in March 2017.

Partner reading charities The Book Bus and Reading Matters were also there at this year’s quiz with information about their events and initiatives. Heckmondwike Primary School was the winner of a prize draw for a free Reading Leaders course, donated by Rachel Kelly and Reading Matters.

Conrad Burdekin summed up the atmosphere of the whole afternoon perfectly:

What a FANTASTIC event it was!”
