Our new mayor in photos – learn more about Councillor Jim Dodds

The new Mayor Cllr Jim Dodds has shared some of his favourite photos with us to give you a glimpse into his past and present passions.

Jim has lived in Kirklees for some time, but was born in Scotland and moved to Newcastle when he was 3,  in later life he and his wife ran a hotel in Harrogate (where he had previously been to military college and met his wife) before they moved to his ward of Denby Dale and the village of Upper Cumberworth in 2002, which he now calls home.

Jim and his wife Carol have 2 children, and 2 grandchildren.

He joined the army at 15 and spent 35 years in the service rising to the rank of Major.  Whilst in the army he ran a youth group and became a record breaker when the group created the longest line of coins.

Jim is a keen sportsman, he was a good runner in his youth, and along with his army colleagues won the ‘Ayios Nikolaos Station to Dhekelia Station’ road race in Cyprus where he was stationed.

The winning team photo

One of the things he is most proud of in his role as a councillor is his involvement in setting up the Kirklees Youth Games,  a tournament that encouraged children to get involved in sport.  This photo is of a group of Chinese students who took part.

Jim’s army career took him around the world, he was stationed in Germany, Cyprus and Singapore.  He still enjoys travel with his family,  this picture was taken with his wife and grandchildren in the USA.
