  • Dear Kirklees Council and community,
I am writing to express my deepest sympathy about the murder of Jo Cox. This was a tragic and appalling incident with devastating implications for Jo’s family and community. I am so sorry that it happened and want to express my condolences at this time. I pray that you and your community will feel peace at this time and the days ahead.
I am familiar with the devastation that can be felt by a community due to atrocities. I was the artist who initiated and delivered the “Petals of Hope” project following the bomb in Omagh, Northern Ireland in 1998, where we made hand-made paper using the flowers which were left in the bomb in the days which followed the atrocity. The creative intervention enabled a community to come to terms with their disappointment and held space as they asked or suspended asking why such a horrific act could happen. I returned to Omagh 15years later and asked how effective the art making process had been during this traumatic period and there was a strong resonance as people reflected on how helpful it had been. I will leave you with a link to the wider story and also my website and if you feel that this process could be useful within your local community, please do not hesitate to contact me as I would be open to further conversations.
