Almost 100 school children took part in a special literacy event called Engage 2016. Engage 2016 - Poet Donavan leads session

The outdoor event was held at Cliffe House in Shepley.

It was part of a project called Engage 2016.  The project ran throughout the summer term and promoted illustrated text and storytelling.

The project helped pupils to identify, read and understand images to make their reading experience better.

The project was led by booksplus, Kirklees Council’s schools library service, and 14 primary schools took part.

What happened at the Engage 2016 celebration event

At the celebration children got to meet illustrator Garry Parsons and rap performance poet Donavan Christopher.

They talked about their work and encouraged the children to get involved. The children all were given a certificate.

Councillor Shabir Pandor -Deputy Leader of the council, and Gill Ellis – Assistant Director for Learning and Skills came to the event.
