Dewsbury town centre is getting a boost thanks to an agreement to turn the former Safeway site into a college.

We agreed to sell the site on Bradford Road to Kirklees College, so that they can use it to build a new facility for the College’s Dewsbury campus.

The college got a grant of over £11m from Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership for the project. They will use some of the money to turn Pioneer House into an additional college campus. Both sites together will create a learning quarter in Dewsbury Town Centre.

2600 young people will be studying in the town centre when the campus opens.

The scheme will be the first major project in the North Kirklees Growth Zone. The zone aims to promote change in Dewsbury and the wider North Kirklees area.

Councillor Peter McBride, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said the move is an important first step in the North Kirklees Growth Zone.

He added:

“This is not only a priority for the Council but it is important for the City Region. The LEP and West Yorkshire Combined Authority have provided funding which will support the creation of a new learning quarter in Dewsbury and bring the vibrancy and footfall that the College brings,  into the town centre.”

The former Safeway site is next to the town’s Lidl supermarket.

Work on site is expected to begin on the site in January. The main construction work will take place in March, then if all goes to plan they will finish it in early 2018.
