Welcome to Huddersfield Independents’ Day – 20 May 2017
Fashion lovers and shop-o-holics are in for a treat on Saturday 20 May when Huddersfield celebrates Independents’ Day.
Bringing the shops, closer than ever
Huddersfield is known for some of the most exciting independent retailers, selling things you won’t find in high street chains and offering friendly, cheerful customer service while you shop.
We know the pain when you can’t always find the right shopping gem you are looking for, so we’ve made it easier – by bringing them EVEN closer together, to the centre of town so everyone can access the goodies, all in one place.
Which Market Stalls will be there?
There’ll be 30 Market Stalls, selling everything from craft materials, to clothing, including: Diamonds and Dusters, Soi77, Silver Lining, Crafty Praxis, Inter-Comics, Diversions. Market traders – Bloodyeyed Pink, Global Village Shop, Baby Hugs, Vegan Beauty Cosmetics, Candy Emporium and more.
Food and Drink ‘Mini Market’
After a hard day of retail therapy shoppers can stop for a drink or something to eat at the Food and Drink Mini Market in the Piazza. Visitors can feast on crepe’s from Le Petit Bretonne, street food from Dapur Malaysia, and Pai Journey; and then they can then wash it all down with a beer from the Magic Rock Brewery or something stronger from Panda’s Kitchen. Other stalls include: Glass Tea Pot, Unusual Chutney Company, Oat Cuisine, and The Dog House.
The Fashion Show
Fashion fans will also have the opportunity to see this season’s indie must have’s during a range of fashion shows starting at 11:30am with spring and summer fashion, then Streetwear at 1pm, and evening wear at 2:30pm – all taking place on New Street. Independent businesses taking part in the show include: Pink Cadillac, Diamonds and Dusters, Working Class Vintage Hero, Cupcake Couture, Soi77, SarahLouise UK, Georgie Porgie’s Little Miss Muffet, and Dorothy’s Giraffe.
The fashion show is supported by students from Kirklees College, Huddersfield University, and the Creative and Media School who will be between them doing all the hair and makeup, modelling and providing the music.
There will also be a fun treasure trail around the town’s independent businesses, ending at the All Good in the Hudd Youth Emporium where all participants can claim their prize! Visitors can get involved by picking up a map from one of the stalls on New Street.
Thanks to Huddersfield District Committee
This is the first of two events planned to promote independent businesses that are being arranged thanks to £8,000 of funding from Huddersfield District Committee.
Cllr Sheik Ullah, Chair of Huddersfield District Committee said:
“I am looking forward to this event, I hope that it will not only encourage more people to visit our lovely town centre but also introduce a new audience to the fantastic selection of independent shops that operate in and around the town centre. Independent retailers are the lifeblood of town centres and play a crucial role in making Huddersfield a vibrant and exciting place to visit.”
