What’s the performance about?

Oakwell Hall on a summer’s night is the perfect location for this thrilling outdoor performance, where audiences can enjoy a performance of Savage Hart, the story of a 19th century aristocrat, haunted by the ghosts of his past and the family of deer who have watched over his dining hall and are now putting they’re their heads together to form a plan.

When can we see the show?

Pack a picnic and join the outdoor audience in Birstall at 7pm, on Thursday 20, Friday 21 and Saturday 22 July 2017, for the magical show by Citrus Arts.

A bit about the staff behind the show…

Citrus Arts’ artistic director James Doyle-Roberts said the Welsh company was looking forward to bringing the premiere of the outdoor production of Savage Hart to the heart of Yorkshire. He said:

“We cannot wait to present the outdoor production in the walled garden at Oakwell Hall. It is such a stunningly beautiful, old building and we know our production will work so well there. We perform using circus skills, ballet and aerial artistry. It will be the first time we have performed Savage Hart outdoors, and the premiere of it in Yorkshire so we are creating a circus rig to perform the aerial acrobatics. It is a really, really, beautiful show and we promise that the audience will be taken on quite a journey. There will be live music too and we feel it will be quite a magical experience with fire illumination and live music.”

This wonderful production has been especially created for the beautiful walled garden at historic Oakwell Hall and co-produced with Creative Scene.

Eric Brown, manager at Oakwell Hall, said:

“The garden dates back to 1583, and is immaculately maintained to create an impression of the 17th century. It is the perfect setting for outdoor productions such as this and we are really looking forward to bringing this exciting company to the Hall and we expect it to be an extra special and popular event.”

Nancy Barrett, Director of Creative Scene, said:

“Creative Scene often puts on shows in unconventional spaces and we are delighted to be working in partnership with Oakwell Hall and museum staff and volunteers to bring this stunning show to a very special place. Citrus Arts are getting a national reputation for their captivating, magical, and visually striking performance works and it’s been a pleasure to work with a team of multi-skilled artists. I’ve been watching rehearsals underway with live cello music and percussionist accompanying the masked performers, wearing handmade felt creations by designer Gladys Paulus – who is world renowned for her felt work skills.

The creative team have been getting used to working in the walled garden and a circus rig is being especially created to allow the performing artists to fly through the air wearing life-size animal masks and costumes. It’s a show that will delight lovers of ballet, dance and contemporary circus-theatre.”
