A629 improvement works – next steps agreed

Kirklees Cabinet has agreed next steps for potential highway improvements on the A629 between Huddersfield town centre, and Ainley Top roundabout.

Works are part of a wider scheme

The improvements are part of a wider scheme being jointly delivered by Kirklees Council and Calderdale Council and being funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authoritiy’s West Yorkshire Transport Fund.

What will the scheme involve?

The aim of the scheme is to improve journey times and reduce congestion. The scheme will help support the creation of new jobs and homes within the districts of Calderdale, Kirklees and the wider region.

The scheme will be carried out over a number of years and will be delivered in four phases. Kirklees Council will be specifically looking at the section of road from Ainley Top into Huddersfield town centre.

The scheme is at early design stage with a number of things needing to be assessed before a final proposal can be consulted on.

What next for the scheme?

The next stage for Kirklees will include coming up with preferred options and beginning discussions with local land owners and directly affected residents and businesses.

Once the Council has developed options a full consultation exercise will be carried out. This is likely to be in late 2018.
