Platinum Pair celebrate 70 years
As Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrate their Diamond Anniversary next week, we thought you’d like to hear about one of our own special couples, who celebrated theirs this year as well.
Kirklees Council Home Library Service officer Martin Hellawell was delighted to learn that two of his regular customers Eddy and Madge Scargill, from Dewsbury were celebrating 70 years of marriage.
Whilst delivering the latest of their favourite Crime Novels Eddie and Madge showed off the card they received from her majesty the Queen to mark the special anniversary.
Eddie and Madge have been using the home library service for over 5 years and enjoy not only a regular supply of books but the chance to have a quick chat with delivery driver Martin.
How did the couple meet?
Martin asked Eddie about how he and Madge got together
Eddie said: “We met at Dewsbury Booth Hall, it was a dance venue in the old days. I didn’t dance but a few of us lads used to go down and see what was there. I lived in Hull before I joined the army, after we met I used to write to Madge a lot and I stayed at her mum and dad’s house when I was on leave.”
After I was demobbed I moved to Dewsbury and two sons and three grandsons later here we are.”
