Consultants Appointed For Dewsbury Market

We have appointed Consultants ‘Market Place (Europe) Ltd’ to advise on the regeneration of Dewsbury Market. This is the next step in the plans to revitalise Dewsbury Town Centre as part of the North Kirklees Growth Zone regeneration project.

Who are the consultants?

Market Place (Europe) Ltd are an innovative and exciting family of independent companies delivering the UK’s only comprehensive market consultancy service.

They will use their specialist knowledge to work with local people on a plan to secure a positive future for Dewsbury Market.  They have lots of knowledge and experience in this field and will work with retail planning experts Carter Jonas, to create a long term strategic plan for Dewsbury Market. They will also look at funding opportunities that are available to the Council in the future to turn ideas into reality.

Nick Rhodes, Chief Executive for Market Place (Europe) Ltd said:

“We place great importance in learning about the market from the people that know it; the traders, the customers and the local businesses and community around it.  We will be looking to find what makes Dewsbury’s market special and unique, so that we can build on that and use it to make it a success for years to come.  I am incredibly excited that we will be working on this project.”

Other improvements we’ve made around the area

The regeneration of the market follows on from the Council’s investment in Pioneer House and the plans for Kirklees College to move their campus to the Dewsbury Learning Quarter.

The Dewsbury Learning Quarter is being part funded through the Leeds City Region Growth Deal, delivered by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) and the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP), supported by Kirklees Council, The Heritage Lottery Fund, and The Dewsbury Townscape Heritage Initiative.

This investment is part of a range of projects that are being planned for Dewsbury and the North Kirklees area over the next 10 years as part of the North Kirklees Growth Zone (NKGZ) economic regeneration initiative.

What do our Councillors say?

Cllr David Sheard, Leader of the Council said:

“I am pleased that we have been able to secure a consultant that can bring Dewsbury’s once famous market back to life. I believe that this work could result in a world class market, which as part of the wider regeneration activity, will continue to enhance the vibrancy and vitality of the town.

It is an exciting time for Dewsbury, with work taking place on Pioneer House and The Springfield Centre to support the new Kirklees Learning Quarter. The Dewsbury Townscape Heritage Initiative is breathing new life back into old buildings and the recent announcement that we have been designated a Heritage Action Area by Historic England will provide further opportunities for regeneration. All this, alongside our commitment to make the most of the market, shows how seriously committed we are to the regeneration of the town.”

Work on the market project will begin in January 2018.
