Young entrepreneurs invited to pitch up
We’re inviting ambitious young entrepreneurs aged 16 to 30 to take part in our next Alternative Market. And this time, not only is it a great local event for shoppers, there’s a chance of a cash prize for stallholders.
When and where is the market?
The market is taking place on New Street, Huddersfield on 23 June 2018. It’s a great chance to browse and buy from stalls run by local young people, many of whom who have made the products they are selling. You can check out photos of our previous events on Facebook.
What is the event about?
The event is part of a family of youth markets being delivered by local authorities across Yorkshire. It is being supported by the National Market Traders’ Federation (NMTF) and this time we’re taking part in a national competition.
A chance to win
At least four young traders from the market will be nominated to be our representatives at the Yorkshire Youth Market, a regional final held on Yorkshire Day, 1 August, at Kirkgate Market, Leeds.
From this event, at least one trader from Kirklees will be offered a pitch on the National Youth Market in Stratford-upon-Avon on 31 August and 1 September. A £500 cash prize is up for grabs. Traders will be judged prior to the event on their businesses unique selling point, quality of their social media etc and, on the day, on presentation, merchandising, knowledge of products and more.
The National Youth Market is run by the NMTF in partnership with LSD Promotions. It attracts traders from all over the UK and is a showcase of young talent who trade on markets, festivals and fairs.
A local young entrepreneur
Polly Fletcher started on the Alternative Market when she was 22. Commenting on why she enjoys running her business on a market, she said:
“I love trading on the markets. It’s nice to be surrounded by other people of a similar age in the same boat as me, who are trying to start a business. Markets are also good for being able talk to people directly about your products and get instant feedback – something you don’t get with an online business. Eventually I want to work for myself and markets are my way of getting there”
How can I get involved?
To apply for a pitch at the Alternative Market, email for an application form. The closing date is 23 May.
