‘Ask Alexa’ about your bin collections
You can now ‘ask Alexa’ when your bins are due to be collected following our launch of a new ‘skill’ on Amazon Alexa.
Voice recognition technology is increasingly being trialled by local authorities across the UK and we are launching the use of Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant for our refuse collection service.
If we can reduce queries about bin collection dates and missed bin collections, and therefore reduce calls and visits to their customer service centres through the use of Alexa, we can deliver services more cost effectively.
Once you’ve installed the skill on an Alexa device you can check when your grey and greens bins are due to be collected and also report a missed bin collection.
How and where can people sign up?
- Open the Alexa App (if you have not already downloaded the app onto your phone/mobile device, it can be found in App Store or Playstore)
- Go to the menu, and select Skills.
- When you find the My Kirklees Skill, select the skill to open the detail page.
- Select the Enable skill option, or ask Alexa to open the skill.
- The skill will then be available to use.
The My Kirklees Skill is an official skill provided by Kirklees Council which allows Kirklees residents to find out information about their upcoming bin collections and if not collected, to report a missed bin.
The information is taken directly from the council’s waste collection system and includes any special collections at Christmas and New Year.
