Greenhead Park Conservatory closes for essential restoration
From Monday 26 November until April 2019, Greenhead Park’s Conservatory and The Park Cafe are set to close for essential restoration takes place.
What is it being closed?
The listed building and café will close after business on Sunday 25 November. Due to the complex and specialist work involved in the restoration, We have taken the decision to fully close the whole area to ensure public safety. In particular, the glazing and metal structure require specialist conservation which will involve scaffolds inside and outside of the building.
What is the history of The Conservatory?
The Conservatory was added to the park in 1930 to provide ‘beautiful foliage and flowering plants’ for all to enjoy. It also acted as a place to educate school children in the story of ‘economic’ plants such as tea, coffee, pineapple and even tobacco. Today it offers an extension to the Park Café with underfloor heating and attractive planting.
Will other park facilities remain open?
The existing Café in the Park in the Refreshment Rooms building by the tennis courts remains open through the winter from 10am to 3pm.
The car park will remain open for the duration of the works.
A spokesperson said:
“The management and staff at The Park Café would like to thank everyone for their custom and look forward to welcoming everyone back to The Park in 2019.”
Updates will be provided in the New Year on the re-opening dates and a special re-launch party.
