“Alexa, who won the Echo Spot?”

Congratulations to Tracey Rushworth who has won a brand new Amazon Echo Spot – just in time for Christmas!

To celebrate the launch of the new My Kirklees Alexa skill for bin collection dates and reporting missed bins, we ran a competition to give away an new Amazon Echo Spot in a free prize draw.

Lucky winner Tracey from Linthwaite was selected at random to receive the prize by Cllr Graham Turner from a list of all My Kirklees Account users .

Collecting her prize from Huddersfield Art Gallery she said “This is a nice surprise just before Christmas, especially as I’ve never used a device like this before – I’m looking forward to talking to Alexa for the first time!”

Cllr Graham Turner said “The launch is part of Kirklees Council’s Digital Strategy and drive to embrace new technology to engage Kirklees residents online at a time and place that suits them. As speech activated technology advances it offers us a new way to engage residents and personalise our communication for their specific needs and share important information exactly when and where they want it. We will continue to look at innovative ways to use technology to enable residents to interact with the Council in a wide variety of ways “

Get the skill

Once you’ve installed the skill on an Alexa device you can check when your grey and greens bins are due to be collected and also report a missed bin collection.

How and where can people sign up?

  1. Open the AlexaApp (if you have not already downloaded the app onto your phone/mobile device, it can be found in App Store or Playstore)
  2. Go to the menu, and select
  3. When you find the My Kirklees Skill, select the skill to open the detail page.
  4. Select the Enable skill option, or ask Alexa to open the skill.
  5. The skill will then be available to use.

The My Kirklees Skill is an official skill provided by Kirklees Council which allows Kirklees residents to find out information about their upcoming bin collections and if not collected, to report a missed bin.

The information is taken directly from the council’s waste collection system and includes any special collections at Christmas and New Year.
