Christmas bin collections – all you need to know

Bin collections will continue as normal up to and including Christmas Eve, December 24, with a break over Christmas and New Year, restarting again on January 2.

What does that mean?

The break means most households will have the equivalent of one less bin collection over the festive period.

What are the changes?

Those with a Tuesday collection day will have a slight change as both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on Tuesday this year. The last normal collection will be on December 18 (Tuesday). The next collection will be on January 4 (Friday) to make up for the collection due earlier that week.

Collections will then return to normal the following week.

Where can I find out more?

Full details of all bin collections over Christmas and New Year, as well as 2019 dates, are on our website at  where residents can also download a printable calendar.

Do you have Alexa?

We have also recently introduced My Kirklees Alexa, allowing you to check when your bin is due to be collected, and report a missed bin collection. For 24/7 online access to council services, you can log their My Kirklees Account.

People who are unable to get online can go to Kirklees Council’s Customer Service Centres for assistance.

Cllr Naheed Mather, Cabinet Member for Communities and Environment, Kirklees Council said:

“We hope by releasing Christmas bin collection details as early as possible it will allow households to plan ahead.

The My Kirklees Account and our recently launched My Kirklees Alexa, are just two of the ways residents can stay on top of which bin to put out, and when. These options are not only free and more convenient for many, but help us to reduce the number of calls we receive, allowing us to make the most of our available resources.

I’d encourage families to go green this Christmas and recycle as much as possible. Wrapping, packaging, card and many plastics can be recycled in your green bin. Waste and other recyclables like glass can be taken to your local household waste recycling centre.”

  • Thank you Kirklees. Our grey were emptied on the 11th December and wont’t be emptied again until the 4th January. Three and a half weeks over the Christmas period is ridiculous.
