Early bird discount for new garden waste service
Households signing up early for our new kerbside garden waste collection service can bag a 20 per cent discount.
How does the service work?
Those signing up for the new service will receive a standard 240 litre brown wheelie bin for domestic garden waste, like grass and hedge cuttings, to be collected fortnightly by the council.
Up to two bins can be requested, with a rolling subscription charge for the collection service of £37.50 per year for one bin, or £67.50 for two bins. The lower rate for collecting two bins reflects savings in collection costs.
How do I get a discount?
Early birds signing up for the service before 31 March will receive a 20 per cent discount off the collection service for one bin for the first year, reducing the usual cost to just £30.
We are encouraging early sign up so households not only benefit from the discounted rate, but to ensure their bin is delivered in time to be used for the first collections, expected to start this May.
Kirklees Passport holders will receive a 20 per cent discount off the full rate of a collection service for one bin all year round.

“This new scheme is a clear demonstration of our commitment for Kirklees to have a high quality, clean, sustainable and green environment.
People are more aware than ever of their impact on the environment and want to do something about it. Our garden waste collection helps people to be greener, whilst also offering more convenience, with each collection costing less than the price of a cup of coffee from some high street coffee shops.
I urge people to sign up now to benefit from the discount and have peace of mind that their bin will be delivered before the first collections start.”
Whilst we have a statutory duty to collect general and recyclable waste there is no such duty for garden waste. Some garden waste from the bulky collection service is currently sent to landfill and can generate greenhouse gas emissions similar to those from food waste.
How will the collections help?
Garden waste collections will help households to be greener and is backed by a survey carried out in 2016/17 in which 76 per cent of respondents showed an interest, or indicated they may be interested, in the introduction of a chargeable garden waste collection.
Garden waste collected by the council will be recycled into compost locally in Dewsbury and used for future growing projects.
When will the collections be?
Fortnightly collections will be made between February and November. There will be no collection in December or January.
How can I sign up?
Households can sign up for this service on our website or you can sign up faster through your My Kirklees Account.
Properties on a bin bag collection or multi-occupancy properties like flats may not be able to sign up for the kerbside collection for operational reasons, but can make a bulky garden waste collection request.
Alternative ways to dispose of garden waste include household composting. Composting is also an environmentally friendly way of getting rid of organic waste from your kitchen and garden. You can order a compost bin here

It’s now May 11th – first collection of brown bin garden waste is on 20th, but bin still not delivered. What on earth is going on? There won’t be much time to use the bin before the first collection is due at this rate. Someone needs to get a grip on this, or the first month will be a waste of time, especially as I paid for the service a few months ago.
When will the bins be delivered, It’s now May and the time of year when there’s lots of clippings etc
paying £2,935.22 council tax and still need to pay a fee for a brown bin collection, what a joke,
there should be no extra fee at all, with kirklees council tax rising every year, with no improvement
in anything at all.

What exactly can go on these bins? Is it just grass and pruning or can I put cut branches etc from the garden
What exactly can you put in a brown bin ?
If you start collections in May, there will be 7 months of collections this year. If it costs £37.50 per year for 10 months of collections, the charge for 7 months is £26.25. You are charging £30 and call this a discount. Have I got this wrong ? Please explain the costing.

What specifically will be accepted besides grass and hedge clippings? What about eg twigs , pruning and weeds?
Are you going to post reminders of which weeks the collections are on the website / email out to those signed up for notifications?
