Dewsbury Train Station receives a £1.2million revamp
A new-look public place is just the ticket at Dewsbury Train Station after a £1.2million revamp.
When did the improvements start?
Our scheme, funded by West Yorkshire Transport, began in May last year and was completed in February 2019.
What changes have been made?
The main change has seen the area at the front of the station pedestrianised, including new seating and planting.
Access has also been improved, with the entrance to the car parks redesigned to ease traffic flow. The pedestrian crossing into town has also been enhanced so both cyclists and pedestrians can cross the road.
Councillor Naheed Mather, Cabinet Member for Communities and Environment, said:
“I’m delighted that these improvement works are now complete, they’ve really enhanced the area, making it more welcoming and accessible.
It’s great to see such significant investment in what is a crucial gateway in and out of Dewsbury. The rail provides quick access to Leeds and Huddersfield, travel to Manchester in less than an hour and brings in visitors to the town.
By investing in this essential part of our transport infrastructure we can really kick off the transformation we have planned for Dewsbury, ensuring that it becomes an even better place to live, work, study and do business.”
Previously it was possible drive up and unload people and luggage (a lot of people travel to Manchester Airport from Dewsbury) directly outside the station and under cover. Now it isn’t.
The changes have forced the closure of the newsagents and shop at the station.
The road signage is all wrong: the sign for the station leads into the eastern car park but doesn’t offer the option of the western car park which has the drop off area and short stay bays. So anyone who follows the signs goes into the wrong car park and finds on coming out they can only turn left downhill. How does this make sense?
So, this 1.2 million revamp for the train station, was just for the outside? Nothing was done for the inside of the station i.e public toilets for those waiting long durations for trains?
