The new Civic Team was announced at the Mayor’s final Civic Reception.

The Reception was held to thank organisations and businesses in the Borough for hosting both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor at events throughout the past year.

What happened?

Cllr Gwen Lowe, who hosted the reception, introduced the incoming Mayor, Councillor Mumtaz Hussain, who will take office from 22 May.

Councillor Hussain will be joined by his wife, Noreen, who will be his Mayoress for his term of office.

Who is Cllr Hussain?

He has been a Kirklees councillor since 2006, representing the Dewsbury West Ward, and has represented the council on the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel and the Kirklees Community Association.

He has also been Chair of Licensing, and has sat on the West Yorkshire Fire Authority Panel.

Cllr Hussain has chosen to support two charities during his term of office as Mayor – both of which he feels passionately about.

His charity appeal will support Diabetes UK and The Samaritans, and he is already planning a busy year with charity representatives to raise both funds and awareness of the charities.

Cllr Hussain said:

“I have had a wonderful time this last year as Deputy Mayor. It has been a privilege to meet so many people doing great work in the borough and contributing to the community and the area in general.

I am looking forward to getting to know many more community groups, organisations and businesses in the area during my term of office. To be Mayor is a great honour and privilege, and I am looking forward to undertaking this very special role.”

Who is the Deputy Mayor?

The Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming Municipal Year will be Cllr Nigel Patrick.

Councillor Patrick is a ward Councillor for the Holme Valley South Ward. He was elected as a Kirklees Councillor in 2002, a year in which he was Chairman of Holme Valley Parish Council, having served as a Parish Councillor since 1995.

He has served on a number of different Committees and Panels over the years, and was most notably Chairman of Scrutiny between 2011 and 2014.

Councillor Patrick said:

“I enjoy working as a local councillor and always try my best to strive for positive results within the local community. It is an honour to be selected to represent the borough as Deputy Mayor, and both my wife and I are looking forward to undertaking this important Civic role.”

Cllr Patrick’s wife, Judith, will be the Deputy Mayoress for the year.

Can I come to the ceremony?

The new Civic Team for Kirklees will take office at the Mayor Making Ceremony on Wednesday 22 May.

The ceremony will be held at Huddersfield Town Hall at 12.30 pm, and everyone is invited to come along and see the ceremony of the occasion.
