We have taken steps towards delivering The Huddersfield Blueprint with the redevelopment of the Co-op building

Another big step towards delivering the £250million The Huddersfield Blueprint vision has been taken, with work now underway to bring a building back into life as student accommodation.

What will the Co-op building be transformed into?

We are working with SKA Developments to transform the former Co-op building on New Street in Huddersfield Town Centre into student accommodation – one of the key projects with in the recently-launched Huddersfield Blueprint vision.

We have invested a significant financial loan to SKA Developments to make this scheme happen and to bring the long-derelict listed building, in a prominent location in the town, back to life.

SKA Developments has specialised in bringing challenging redundant commercial and retail property within the town centre back into use as residential accommodation.

When was the planning permission granted?

We granted SKA Developments planning permission in April 2018 to renovate the building and to add a contemporary extension to the existing roof. The scheme is for student accommodation comprising 134 beds – these will be a mix of en-suite studios, clusters of rooms with communal facilities, and 1 and 2 bed apartments across 7 floors.

Cllr Peter Mcbride, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said:

“The building which is located within the Huddersfield Town Centre Conservation Area at the corner of New Street and Queensgate (Huddersfield Ring Road) is currently in a poor condition which has a negative impact on this part of the town centre.

The redevelopment of this historic building is an important step forward in delivering the first stage of the council’s Blueprint, and creates an exciting opportunity to bring the building back to life and into use – supporting our vision to create a thriving, modern-day town centre.

We’re a council that delivers and this is further proof of our commitment to bringing the Blueprint vision to life.”

Zeb Pervaiz, Director of SKA Developments said:

“This project represents an extremely important chapter in the redevelopment of the town centre and it’s something we’re very excited to be leading. Our plans for the Co-op building will transform the site into an amazing space and bring a long-vacant location back into use, helping to create a vibrant town centre.”

Our experience and ambition within Huddersfield and Kirklees, such as our existing accommodation at Dundas Street and our plans for the Greater Waterfront Quarter, places us well to make a real success of this project and we look forward to announcing contractors soon, to get work started. By working closely with key partners such as Kirklees Council and Leeds City Region, we’re looking forward to taking the next step on our own journey, whilst playing an important role in the future of Huddersfield.”

The building at No. 103 New Street comprises the vacant 1930’s extension to the former Co-op building.

How can I view the wider plans for Huddersfield?

To view the wider plans for Huddersfield people can drop into the Huddersfield Blueprint shop which opened on Monday 8 July, 2019 at Unit 32, the Piazza Centre, Huddersfield Town Centre. The shop will be open Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm.

  • Hi Christopher, please fill out a contact form https://www.kirklees.gov.uk/beta/contact-the-council/frequent-contacts/default.aspx?contact=housing.solutions@kirklees.gov.uk and the correct team will chase this up for you. ^EMT

  • The existing student accommodation is very extensive, can you please inform us if the council will be reconpenced for the accommodation, or is this totally funded by the ratepayer.

  • In a past life the building was the hone of Oastler College (teacher training) so it’s apt that it will again breath to the sound of student life. Let’s hope there is some recognition of its past life in the refurbishment!

  • We have a vast shortage of houses to rent, yet again students are getting priority for accommadation. When are the local councillors going put the people first.

  • Why does everything have to be for students youll never fill them all WE have now moved out of huddersfield for good

  • do we not have more than enough student accommodation.how about housing for homeless or is there no money in that

  • Alan Marchington

Obviously there will need to be parking for students but how will this affect the current car park attached to Wilkinson’s?

  • barbara rushforth

yet more student accommodation. So it will be empty for a large part of the year. What happened to social housing? Huddersfield is desperate for that. As in the rest of the UK.

  • Complete opposite of what the Town centre needs… But that’s Kirklees Council for you

  • Christopher Smith

I find spending all this money on a building is disgusting. There are council houses that need to brought up to today’s standards. I have been waiting to have my damp proof sorting. Been waiting for over a year. This is another Kirklees council waisting money. You odious council EMPLOYEES.
