One stop drop-in event for families of children with special educational needs and disabilities

Kirklees Children Services in conjunction with PCAN (Parents of Children with Additional Needs) is hosting a one stop drop-in event for families of children with special educational needs and disabilities on 20 September.

A follow up to the Help Us To Help You event

The drop-in event is a follow up to the Help Us To Help You events which ran throughout June and is the largest of the events.

Building on the success of the June events and in direct response to feedback, the Council’s Children’s Service and PCAN have planned a ‘Help Us To Help You…Next Steps’ – their biggest information advice and guidance session so far.

Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet Member for Children said:

“Parents and carers have previously said that having information available in their local communities has made a real difference to their lives. They also told us they would like a further event with all information in one place.

In response to this feedback, we have worked closely with our partner PCAN to organise this one-stop event, which has an array of information and support services for parents, carers and professionals caring for children with additional needs or a disability in one place, in order offer help and support and guidance and an fantastic opportunity for networking”.

What’s happening at the event?

The event will feature over 40 stall holders, bringing together different agencies, providers and support services in one place. Representatives from health, education and community activities will all be in attendance and lots more.

It offers families the freedom and space to find out what is on offer in their local communities, make direct links with support groups, meet the people who run the groups, and gather information and to talk about their child or young person –

Is there an opportunity to attend workshops?

There will also be the opportunity to attend one of the following workshops:

  • Direct payments (10:30 -11:30)
  • What young people have told us (12:00-12:45)
  • Parent and carer engagement feedback event (13:30 – 14:30)

Carol Thomas, PCAN Trustee said:

“Families will have the freedom and space to find out what support and services are on offer locally across Kirklees.

It is a free drop-in event, and we hope you will find time to come along. I’d like to thank Kirklees Council’s Children’s Services for working with people and listening to parents and carers.”

An event that’s accessible to all

We want the event to be accessible to all, so please let us know if you have any special requirements.

When and where is the event?

The event will be held at the Textile Centre, Huddersfield between 10 – 3pm. There will also be face painting available for younger children and refreshments will be available to purchase.
