Our ambition to deliver outstanding services for children has been backed at a meeting of all councillors.

It is a top priority for children and young people in Kirklees to have the best start in life – and our progress in achieving this was recently recognised by Ofsted.

Mel Meggs, Director of Children’s Services, told Full Council about the improvements that continue to be made, the outcome of this year’s Ofsted inspection and the aim to reach a judgement of ‘outstanding’ when Ofsted return.

Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet member for Children, outlined the importance of corporate parenting. All elected members share the role of corporate parent, which means they are responsible for protecting and supporting children and young people who are in care.

Mel Meggs said:

“We were pleased that Ofsted confirmed the significant progress we are making across Children’s Services. We have come a long way and there is still a lot of work to do, but we are very much heading in the right direction.

We are very clear about our areas for improvement and what needs to be done. We are working at pace to transform the way we support children, young people and families.

Our workforce are passionate about helping children to achieve the best possible outcomes. With the excellent support of councillors and our partner organisations, we are changing lives.”

Cllr Kendrick said:

“A child’s journey can have a massive impact on their future and can shape the opportunities they experience in years to come. As corporate parents of children and young people who are in care, all councillors undertake a very serious commitment.

We can all promote the life chances of young people by helping them into training or employment, by securing funding for projects which boost confidence and by encouraging families and individuals to enquire about becoming foster carers.

Councils have many vital roles to play, but none are more important than helping children and young people enjoy the best start in life. We want to ensure that there are positive childhood experiences and that we support the most vulnerable in our communities.”

Cllr Shabir Pandor, Leader of Kirklees Council, said:

“All of our hard work to invest time and resources into Children’s Services has helped to build sustainability and trust in the wider system.

Every day I see the improvements that are being achieved and the difference we are making to children and families. This council is ambitious for its young people and we will not stop aiming for the highest of standards.”
