A Welcoming Winter Walk

We are encouraging people to get out in the fresh air this December and join Castle Hill Ranger for a refreshing winter walk.

When is the walk?

The walk takes place on Friday 20 December, the eve of Winter Solstice –  the longest night and shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

What is the Winter Solstice?

The Winter Solstice is the ancient belief that the sun stood still for 12 days in the middle of winter. The ancients would light a Yule log during this time to conquer the darkness, banish evil spirits, and welcome the rebirth of the sun and longer days to bring luck for the coming year.

How long is the walk?

The walk will be 5 miles long and starts at 12noon from the car park at the top of Castle Hill in Almondbury, Huddersfield, and will last around three hours.

More information

Walkers will need good footwear, warm clothing and waterproofs. No dogs allowed except assistance dogs.

Book your place

The walk is free but places must be booked in advance by contacting Julian on 07870 570914 for details.

Karl Battersby Strategic Director, Economy & Infrastructure said:

“These walks are great way to take in the beautiful scenery Kirklees has to offer, whilst getting some exercise and meeting new people.”
