Could you be part of the compost crew

We’re giving away a new generation of composters to 1000 environmentally-minded residents to find out which one is best.

The trial is part of our commitment to reducing waste and tackling the climate emergency.

Which composters are you giving away?

The composters on offer are a bit different from those you may have seen before. They offer the ability to dispose of much more than vegetables and garden waste.

We have 250 of each of the following composters to give away:

The Green Johanna top trump card The wormery top trumps card The Green Cone Composter top trump card The Bokashi Composters top trump card

Green Cones, Green Johannas, Wormeries, and Bokashi bins. Each system is very different in both how it looks and the way it works.

We are giving away the composters in return for feedback on how effective they are in real-life situations.

How do I apply for a composter?

You will be able to apply for the composter trial from 20 January until the 3 February. Then 1000 people will be selected at random to receive one.

The lucky recipients will be asked to complete two short surveys about their experience; one after 3 months then again after 6 months.

Why are we doing this?

Should the trial be successful, we will be looking at offering a subsidised scheme so even more people can benefit.

Cllr Rob Walker Cabinet Member for Environment said:

“This scheme will help the council learn more about the types of composter available on the market by understanding how they work in real-life situations. Manufacturer’s guides can only tell us so much, we want to know the good, the bad and the ugly reality behind these innovative composting systems.

We know composting isn’t for everyone, but we hope these new designs will make them accessible to a wider audience.

This is just one of a range of initiatives we are working on to make it easier to reduce waste and recycle more over the next few years.”

In addition to the 1000 residents, testing the new systems out, four members of the compost crew will be vlogging about their experiences. Everyone will be able to see how Emma, Jordan, Bill, and Richard get on by signing up for the waste and recycling e-bulletins at www.kirklees.gov.uk/stayconnected.

Hi Gill, I’m glad you found this useful! Unfortunately, we don’t have any to give out but you can find them on some online retailers and when they open again in garden centres. I hope this helps. Stay safe ^CP

  • Hi. I’ve just been reading about the trail which I realise I am too late for. I didn’t see it at the time but with all this extra time on my hands I’ve been looking into starting to use a bokashi to reduce waste and produce fertiliser. I googled it and found your trail. Could you please tell me if you have any spare bokashi kits or if I can obtain one some other way. Thanks.

  • Very keen to take up the trial but can not get my application complete on web site wont recognise my address

  • good idea except application won’t submit keeps saying one of fields not filled in

  • Tried to apply but it won’t accept address. Happened to a friend too.

  • Great idea

  • Would be a great idea to apply for one of these. Only problem when I fill the form in it keeps telling me that I need to fill in my address but my address is already filled in and won’t let me submit the form. Maybe your IT department need to look at this.

  • The application form doesn’t work. On the address details it says I’ve missed filling out a section, which I haven’t, so it won’t allow me to submit the application.

  • Just a pity that the registration for this fails on the website – tried Edge, IE and Chrome. Asking for a field to be completed at end of document that does not exist. Something to do with Address I think.

  • I’m trying to apply. I think it’s a great idea but it’s not populating my address correctly. Can you advise?

  • Tried to apply but when I pressed the ‘submit’ button it told me I needed to complete my address. This was ‘self populated’ and did not allow me to add or amend so I was unable to complete my application

  • Good to see the authority being proactive about waste 🙂

  • My address is auto populated and I keep getting an error for missing field and therefore cannot submit my application for the composter trial

  • Great idea, but using my account having filled in my details it doesn’t accept my address! Frustrating.

  • Excited to see this!

  • Great idea
