Supporting vulnerable autistic residents in a time of crisis
We are organising an event that will offer support to vulnerable residents with autism.
Autism show 2020
This year’s Autism Show was due to be held in Huddersfield but due to the coronavirus lockdown and social distancing, it was decided to turn the event virtual and offer support to people online whilst they were safe and well at home.
Who is the event aimed at?
The event is aimed at people who have autism or know someone in the family who is autistic. It is also for professionals who work with autistic people such as social workers and teachers in specialist schools. The event will connect people with organisations that can help them, as well as create a better understanding of the autism spectrum.
What will happen at this years event?
Developed in partnership with South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust (SWYPFT) the Autism Show will feature a welcome message from Professor Marios Adamou, Consultant Psychiatrist in Neurodevelopmental Psychiatry at SWYPFT.
The event will comprise guest speakers delivering webinars on a range of issues and will have information about organisations who will offer advice on employment opportunities, education, housing, leisure activities and how autism is actually diagnosed.
Cllr Musarrat Khan, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care said:
“I am really pleased to see that despite the challenges we face because of the coronavirus lockdown, we have managed to organise this fantastic event on autism to support the needs of the vulnerable members of our communities in order to keep them well and independent.”
Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet Member for Children said:
“I would encourage as many people as possible to watch the event in order to bust some of the myths and stereotypes that people with autism, especially children, face regularly. Events like this will help provide the best start for children who have autism.”
When is the event taking place?
The Autism Show will be shown on Facebook Live on Wednesday 29 April 10.30 -15:00.

We prefer Autistic* not “living with”. It is an inherent part of who we are, you wouldn’t say someone is “living with deaf” would you?
