More market stalls to re-open this month
Our markets have continued to operate throughout lockdown to provide local people with access to essential items like food and toiletries. Now in line with government guidance, we’re working towards opening markets for customers to buy other items.
How are we doing this?
We’re working closely with traders to make sure markets can open safely with the necessary social distancing and hygiene precautions in place. To allow for social distancing the council is taking a phased approach to opening its markets, and as such not all traders will return the first week and some traders will be located in different stalls.
Cleckheaton Farmer’s Market will open first at the St John’s Car Park on Saturday 6 June, followed by Dewsbury Outdoor Market on Wednesday 10 June, the remaining council operated markets, which are considered to be indoor markets are expected to increase their offer from 15 June in line with government advice.
To help keep everyone safe, there will be instructional signs, one way systems and access to hand sanitiser. Touchpoints like door handles and bannisters will also be cleaned regularly throughout the day. Public toilets will, unfortunately, have to remain closed.
The markets team will be on-site to advise people on the changes and help them find the stalls they need.
Batley and Birstall Markets which are run by a private operator will also open for the first time since lockdown this coming week. Birstall Market which is located on market place will open on Thursday 4 June from 9am to 4pm and Batley Market will open on Friday 5 June from 9am to 4pm. The council is supporting the operator to put in place measures to make sure social distancing can be maintained on these sites.

“Our markets team are working closely with traders to make sure it is safe for markets to begin extending their offer. Markets remain an important part of our towns, and for many people, they provide access to affordable products that they couldn’t get elsewhere.
The safety of the traders and visitors is our highest priority which is why we are taking a phased approach. As we move into the recovery stage of the pandemic, by taking these cautious first steps we can provide our shoppers with choice and support our traders.”

“Extending the markets offer depends on the council, traders and visitors working so that everyone can stay safe and enjoy the experience. It’s really important that everyone follows the instructions on-site and treats each other with respect. Please be patient if you have to queue for longer than usual and limit what you touch to things you are intending to buy. By following these rules we can help keep coronavirus under control and save lives.”
