Kirklees Libraries announce plans to welcome back local communities

when can we expect the Home Library service to resume? Its been nice chatting to Ian sometimes and it was kind of him to keep in/ touch but when can we have new books?

  • Great news very good luck

  • Sounds like a really good plan. I’m sure it will be hugely appreciated by your many customers. Good luck to you all.

  • please get as many lines asyou can, might be a lot of calls

  • About time everywhere else is already open. Typical useless KMC

  • This is encouraging news and thank you to all concerned. Given that library books are in a protective ‘plastic’ cover, what is the transmission life of Covid-19 on these covers? What sanitisation action will be taken on all returned books?

    • Hi Mike, all returns are quarantined for 72 hours before being handled by staff and returned to the shelves. The current scientific advice is that this effectively sanitises the books and makes them safe to go out again. Thanks ^EMT

  • Can you put phone numbers on ?

  • Catherine Morris

What about books that I have already ordered from the online catalogue – will I be able to collect these from one of the above libraries soon?

    • Hi Catherine, at the present time you can only request books from the online catalogue as part of Ring and Read if they are already available from the library you wish to collect from. Books cannot currently be transported between libraries at present due to the potential risk of spreading the infection. Thanks, ^EMT

  • Looking forward to bringing back my book and ordering new ones, a welcome return.

  • Brought back my books to Huddersfield today the library is closed???? What are these muppets doing??????. #Kirklees Council are useless. Com

Hi Steven, Sorry that you ventured out and it was closed. Huddersfield Library is open today from 10am. Was it before 10 when you arrived at the library? ^CP

      • I also tried to return my books to Huddersfield library yesterday at 10-30.
        Then tried Slaithwaite at 11am
They are still in my car

      • Hi Angela, please note books should be returned in the green bins placed outside library buildings at the specified times. Kind regards ^EMT

  • Has a date been decided yet when libraries e.g. Cleckheaton Library will be open to the public again?

Hello Denise, all of our libraries are only open for the ring and read service at the moment. Cleckheaton’s is available on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 10am-2pm. We are taking a phased approach to see how we can best introduce services, starting with some of the communities that need it the most. This will allow us to ensure that we keep an eye on infection rates across the borough and ensure that we can operate safely. All the best ^CP

  • Can you answer me a more general question please? I have a reservation for a book. Every time I look at my account I go further down the waiting list! Obviously some glitch with the system but this has happened before. Thanks

Hi Wendy, if you call the local library where you ordered it our team should be able to advise you 01484 414868. Just please be aware of the new opening times in the article. Kind Regards ^CP

  • Any news on when Cleckheaton Library will re-open?

    • chelseykirklees

  • So shops, restaurants, leisure centres etc are all either open or ready to open but there is no indication of libraries opening anytime soon. If these other places can open then why not librairies? They have had enough time off from work. Just allow in people with masks to be aligned with scientific consensus and get back to work.

Good afternoon Rob, Our library staff have been working extremely hard during lockdown to provide an innovative service to the people of Kirklees. We have developed an exciting online offer, have increased our eBook offer ( by 30,000 🙂 ) and many library staff have been redeployed, taking on a significantly different role to help with the community response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are taking a phased approach to see how we can best introduce services, starting with some of the communities that need it most. This will allow us to ensure that we keep an eye on infection rates across the borough and ensure that we can operate safely. We hope to be able to open fully soon but we have to ensure it’s safe to do so. I hope this helps.^CP

Hello, I had a book ready for pick up at Huddersfield before the lockdown took effect. Is there a way to collect it now?

    • chelseykirklees

Hi Anne, if you call the local library where you ordered it our team should be able to advise you. Just please be aware of the new opening times in the article. Kind Regards ^CP

  • Cleckheaton open Monday to Wednesday 10am to 12 noon. I work as do many others. How can I get library books or even return the ones that I have had since March? Is one later opening a week not possible? Thanks

    • chelseykirklees

Good afternoon Janet, we are working to a phased schedule so will look into the possibility of further slots. Please keep an eye on the times in this article as we regularly post updates. For now, if you contact us about Ring and Read you are welcome to send someone on your behalf to collect books. I hope this helps ^CP

  • On your list above you have Golcar Library down as one of those offering ‘Ring and Read’ from August 3rd, but you have no times shown for the return of library books to Golcar. Please can you clear up this anomaly.
