Black History Month 2020
October is Black History Month in the UK and it’s been celebrated nationwide every year for nearly 40 years.
What’s happening in Kirklees?
Each year, Black History Month is celebrated in Kirklees but due to the coronavirus outbreak, many of this year’s events will be held virtually. We have produced for you an event booklet with the details of virtual events that have been organised by community groups and individuals, local organisations and Kirklees Council.

Black History Month 2020 – Event Booklet
Cllr Shabir Pandor, Leader of Kirklees Council, said:
“I am so proud to see how Kirklees residents, community groups, organisations and the council have adapted to these unique times to make sure that Black History Month is celebrated this October. The coronavirus outbreak may have halted our ability to host physical events but that hasn’t stopped the people of Kirklees from organising a timetable of virtual events which celebrate black history and provide us all with the opportunity to learn.
“As the leader of the council, I will continue to work hard tackling all forms of racism, discrimination and inequalities. Our biggest strength in Kirklees is our diversity and we must celebrate this at every opportunity.

What a great way to celebrate the contribution made by the black community to the rich life of Kirklees. Thank you for this. I look forward to attending some of the events.
Black people have been living here for centuries. Some Romans were black. And you can’t understand British history without knowing about our relationship with African and Caribbean countries. So Black history is British history and we all benefit from knowing more about how we got to where we are now. So thanks Kirklees and I look forward to taking part
Hello John, Black History Month has been celebrated throughout the UK for the last 40 years, across all political parties and here in Kirklees, we will continue to celebrate it. Black Britons helped shape and influence today’s society in the UK and Kirklees has benefited massively from the contributions of the African-Caribbean communities. We want to promote the month to celebrate black history but also use it as an opportunity to educate ourselves and our residents about the social, cultural and economic contributions of black Britons.
