Kirklees Council joins Day of reflection
Kirklees Council will light up local landmarks this evening (23 March 2021) to mark the anniversary of the country’s first national COVID-19 lockdown. Council staff will also pause for a minute’s silence at midday today to reflect on the past year and pay their respects to everyone who has died during the pandemic.
The council’s actions are part of Marie Curie’s national Day of Reflection to remember everyone who has died in the pandemic and to support all those bereaved and affected by the events of the past year.
The Day of Reflection is an opportunity for everyone to reflect on their collective loss and support those who’ve been bereaved. A national minute’s silence will take place at midday and landmarks across the country will be lit up in the evening to remember and honour those who have passed away.
Council workers will pause at midday (23 March 2021) for a minute’s silence to reflect on the past year. In the evening, the council will light up Castle Hill and its town halls in Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Batley and Cleckheaton.

Leader of Kirklees Council, Councillor Shabir Pandor, said: “A year ago, our world turned upside down. Since then, we’ve lost so many friends and loved ones. At midday, alongside millions of people across the country, I will be pausing to reflect on the tragedy that has affected so many families and communities in Kirklees and across the country. In the evening, we will light local landmarks across the borough to honour those who have passed away to show we are thinking about them and about the people who mourn them.
“I will be reflecting on our immense loss today but I will also be taking time to think about all those who have worked so hard and sacrificed so much to keep each other safe. I want to thank everyone in Kirklees for looking out for their community throughout this most difficult year.”
