Meet the new Civic team and watch the official ceremony live

We are pleased to officially welcome the new Kirklees Council Civic team for 2021-22.

Currently serving as Deputy Mayor, Councillor Nigel Patrick will officially take office on Wednesday 19 May when the Mayor Making ceremony will take place and current Mayor Councillor Mumtaz Hussain steps down.

The Mayor Making Ceremony will be streamed live on You Tube and will include a special pre-recorded set from Hade Edge Band and a film from the Mayor’s charity, Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team.

Who is Councillor Patrick?

Cllr Patrick has represented the Holme Valley South Ward for almost 20 years.  He was elected in 2002 when he was the Chairman of Holme Valley Parish Council, having served as a Parish Councillor since 1995.  Cllr Patrick will be joined by his wife Judith as Mayoress.

Cllr Patrick said:

“Myself and Judith are both looking forward to meeting up with people and visiting communities across Kirklees again after what has been a difficult year for everyone.”

Outgoing Mayor, Cllr Hussain said:

“It has been an honour to serve as Mayor of Kirklees for the past two years.  The Mayoress and I have thoroughly enjoyed our experience as part of the Civic team.  We have met so many inspirational people across the borough and witnessed communities come together through difficult times.  It has been a pleasure to be part of the team and I wish the incoming Mayor and Mayoress every happiness in their new roles.”

Deputy Mayor

Cllr Mahmood Akhtar, will join the Civic team as Deputy Mayor.

Cllr Akhtar said:

“I look forward to being part of the Civic team and working alongside Cllr Patrick.  It’s an honour to be selected as this year’s Deputy Mayor.”

The Mayor’s Charity

Cllr Patrick has chosen to support the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team during his term as Mayor.  They are a voluntary search and rescue organisation covering the southern half of West Yorkshire.  The charity is often called to assist incidents attended by West Yorkshire Police and the Yorkshire Ambulance service.
