We are working on an alternative scheme to reduce congestion in Holmfirth after listening to the views of residents.
What did we propose?
In partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), we developed proposals designed to improve traffic flow through the town centre as well as improving the pedestrian experience.
In March this year local residents and businesses were invited to have their say on the proposals.
The original plans included making Victoria Street one-way, creating a mini-roundabout at the junctions between Victoria Street, Town Gate, Hollowgate and Dunford Road and creating a new link road between Hollowgate and the A6024 Huddersfield Road.
Following a series of exhibitions and a public engagement process, an overwhelming majority of local people were against the proposals.

What decision has been made?
We have therefore decided not to deliver these plans and redesign a scheme which reflects the feedback received from residents. Work is underway on designing the new proposed scheme with plans to hold an exhibition in September.
Cllr Peter McBride, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said:
“We consult with residents on projects such as this because it’s absolutely crucial that plans work for the people it will impact. Delivering a scheme that people don’t want is in no one’s interests so we’re going to relook it at and propose something different for Holmfirth.
These new proposals will re-purpose the town centre, making it a vibrant place to be and will enhance the areas for festivals. It will provide much-needed improvements for pedestrians, whilst still improving traffic flow through the area – the key requirement for receiving funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
We are aware of the Holme Valley Parish Council draft Neighbourhood Plan and the work this is trying to achieve, so have mutual objectives in mind. We hope the latest proposals reflect this and receives the support from the people of Holmfirth so we can take the scheme forward.”
