Black History Month was established in 1987 to acknowledge, raise awareness and promote the vast contributions people of Black African and Caribbean descent have made to the UK and world history.
We work with individuals, community groups, and organisations in Kirklees to collate all the events taking place throughout the month. Take a look at the Black History 2022 Events Leaflet to find an event for you.
Cllr Shabir Pandor, Leader of Kirklees Council
Cllr Shabir Pandor, Leader of Kirklees Council, said:
“Year after year, our community organisations in Kirklees do a brilliant job of organising both educational and inspirational Black History Month events.
“I’m extremely proud that Kirklees Council and our communities work together to celebrate this month. Black History Month provides the opportunity to educate ourselves, our friends, families and neighbours about the significant contributions of black Britons. Kirklees, like the rest of the UK, has hugely benefited both culturally and economically thanks to our black African and Caribbean communities.
“This year’s theme, ‘Time for Change: Actions Not Words’, is an extremely important message. We must support the black African and Caribbean communities with actions and not just words. The Iroko project, which was recognised nationally and internationally, was our response to the inequalities that the community face. We demonstrated action but we have more work to do.”
“Our biggest strength in Kirklees is our diversity and I look forward to celebrating it this Black History Month.”
