The Cultural Heart – The beating heart of the town
After months of public engagement, we have now submitted the official planning application for the Cultural Heart.
We have completed two phases of public consultation which began back in May and finished in September. A whopping 8,000 people engaged online and 600 attended our face-to-face events. Thank you!
The people of Kirklees have had lots to say on the plans, and we are grateful to everyone that took the time to engage with us. This valuable information has helped shape the final planning application.
Our town needs to give new reasons for people to visit Huddersfield, the Cultural Heart will be a huge boost to Huddersfield town centre.
Entertainment, food, culture, heritage and creativity, all on one campus, is exactly what Huddersfield needs to inject some vibrancy into the town centre.
Our Cultural Heart website is live and we will continue to update with information as its available. You will find the plans here too.

The George Hotel
When we first bought the George Hotel back in 2020, we made a commitment to the future of this iconic building.
We are making exciting progress towards making our vision for the George Hotel come to life, you could say we are raising the roof.
£20million has now been approved by Cabinet to allow us to continue restoring and developing the building so it is in prime condition to house a quality hotel.
Phase one – asbestos removal and general works to make the building safe, is complete and we are now deep into phase two where roof works are progressing, the stonework restoration is well on its way and the windows are in manufacture.
But this isn’t the only news we have …
We have named the Radisson Hotel Group as our preferred operator and will now progress to the drawing up of a formal Hotel Management Agreement.
Watch this space for more updates!
If you have not seen it already, take a look at our video and go on a whistle-stop tour of the building and see for yourself the condition the building was in before we started these conservation works. It’s an eye-opener.

We aim to make Huddersfield town centre a family-friendly town where everyone feels safe and welcome. We aim to provide a dedicated community that welcomes potential residents and visitors from all walks of life with a reassuring presence. We’ll look to work with other agencies to commit resources to achieve this.
The Estates Building
From one historic building to another – The Estates Building is another flagship project in the Huddersfield Blueprint.
Contractors H H Smith were handed the keys at the beginning of October. Top priority is to set up the compound making it safe for the public, so work can begin.
Station Street is now closed to traffic but still open for pedestrian access. If you need alternative parking visit our parking information page. Redirection of traffic on St Peter’s Street has been introduced to help with these changes.
The taxi ranks on Railway Street are moving directly across the road to make space for the construction.
The businesses on Station Street are open as usual. Once the compound is ready for action repairs will begin. The roof, the windows and the stonework will all be getting a facelift.

We are working with Thirteen Group to explore the possibilities for residential purposes but watch this space for further updates!

Blueprints are taking large steps forward!
We are investing in other towns and villages around Kirklees. The Batley Blueprint consultation is live until 21 November.
Our focus in phase one has identified four centres in Kirklees:
- Batley
- Cleckheaton
- Heckmondwike
- Holmfirth
Our goal is to work in partnership with ward councillors, local communities, businesses, developers, and voluntary groups to inspire and encourage new investment into these towns.
Get involved and have your say! Batley Blueprint
