A small-scale kerbside glass collection trial starts on Monday, just 12 months on from the start of our Resources and Waste Strategy.
This trial is the final of our nine 12-month pledges detailed in the Strategy. Other pledges include a Recycling Champions scheme, a reuse shop in Huddersfield, a new bookable bulky waste collection system, and a recycling service for commercial Trade Waste customers, all of which are already benefitting residents, schools, and businesses across Kirklees.
During the public consultation for the Resources and Waste Strategy, residents were asked questions about glass recycling which informed the Strategy. This early trial will go one step further, not only testing viability but also defining the best option for rolling out collections across Kirklees. This is a critical stage to ensure that any future Kirklees-wide collections will meet demand and operate smoothly.
How long will the trial run for?
The glass collection trial will run for six months and cover properties across all 23 wards of the borough. There are approximately 1400 residential properties made up of a combination of communal council Homes & Neighbourhoods properties and private rentals, as well as an additional 35 council Trade Waste customers taking part. Everyone taking part has been contacted by the waste team directly and will be provided with one of two types of wheeled recycling bins and their own recycling bag to help carry glass to their bins.
Councillor Mather, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:
“We know that Kirklees residents are keen to recycle, and we applaud that. We’re keen to get it right, which is where the glass collection trials come in; information gathered at this stage will help to inform our teams so they can make the best decision when planning how we may collect glass in the future from all households and businesses across the district.”
Why are we doing this?
The glass trial is just one part of the Resources and Waste Strategy. The strategy sets out our ambitious plans to achieve a clean, green, sustainable future for Kirklees with zero waste to landfill and where waste is valued as a resource through re-use, recycling, and recovery.
Over the next five years, we also plan to achieve 90% diversion from landfill. As well as starting the process of re-procurement of our waste disposal contract.
Not been selected to take part?
If you’ve not been selected to take part in the trial you can still contribute to glass recycling by using bottle banks around the district, there are over 100 bottle banks across Kirklees, in addition to those found at each of the borough’s five Household Waste and Recycling Centres; you can find your nearest bottle bank our website.
