The Mayor of Kirklees has praised youngsters and a charity as they made a presentation to launch a project to protect our communities.
The Huddersfield Giants Community Trust invited the mayor to talk to youngsters who took part in their summer National Citizen Service Changemakers scheme.
The group are proposing to launch a campaign where they bring knife crime amnesty boxes to various locations across the borough over a two-week period.
The Mayor of Kirklees Councillor Masood Ahmed said:
“To hear about the possible project to place knife amnesty boxes within Kirklees is inspiring.
We know the devastating impacts that knife crime has had on communities across the country as well as here in Kirklees.
As Mayor it was an honour to meet the students. It filled me with so much pride that we have young people in our borough with the strength and resilience to ask, ‘what can we do to help our communities?’”

The trust and youngsters spent time during October half term creating the project and formulating a plan.
During the planning, they brainstormed, created research and made a PowerPoint presentation on it which they showed during the meeting with the mayor.
Summer NCS programme
NCS Changemakers are young people aged 16-18 years old who have completed the NCS Summer programme in 2022.
These young people have volunteered their time to participate in further social action that benefits their local community.
The Trust has undertaken numerous projects where young people have supported several local organisations to make a positive impact on their local community.
