”Kirklees is a place with a strong and proud tradition of unity and tolerance. We know that communities across our region will remain true to these values and not allow those who wish to sow division, to undermine our unity or our welcome to those who seek sanctuary with us.
We absolutely condemn the violence, intolerance, islamophobia and racism that has been displayed by a small minority recently and recognise the importance of fairness and equality in combatting these messages of hatred.
It is clear that recent events have been frightening and unsettling and we would like to reassure residents, staff and businesses that we have, and will continue to actively play our part, working along with our dedicated police service and others to avoid misinformation and ensure ongoing safety of our communities.
We wish to extend our gratitude to those who have worked to keep others safe through this difficult time and to redouble our commitment to ensuring another 50 years of Kirklees celebrating our strength in diversity, our shared unity and commitment to peace.”
