We were honoured to celebrate our children in care and care leavers with two special events to mark their achievements.
Children and young people aged 5 to 11 were at the Shining Stars Awards and 12-17 year olds attending the Recognition Awards, where they received certificates highlighting their amazing efforts and talents.
Many children in care have additional care or support needs, meaning they often face greater challenges than their peers.
The awards were a great way to praise their achievements and also showcase the council’s work in ensuring those who are in care enjoy the best opportunities to thrive.
Our children and young people were joined by carers, councillors, staff and special guests at the two events, which were hosted by partners including Kirklees College.
Mr Rabbit was on hand to entertain all at the Shining Star ceremony alongside face painting, a treasure hunt and much more.
The Recognition Awards saw performances from young people themselves and an appearance from recent ‘The Voice’ contestant Callum. Members of Huddersfield Town football team joined the ceremony to sign autographs and give out tickets – provided by Huddersfield Town Foundation – for upcoming games.
Fifteen children and young people even demonstrated their Bake-Off skills by providing cakes for the judges – Kirklees Council Chief Executive, Steve Mawson, and Cabinet member for Children’s Services, Cllr Viv Kendrick.
Cllr Kendrick said:
“Supporting our young people in care is a key priority for all of us in Kirklees. With the support of our partners, we are committed to offering opportunities to all.
“It’s a thrill to spend time with wonderful young people and show them how proud we are of their achievements. We hope the pride they felt in attending will be another way of inspiring them to fulfil their potential.”
One of the young people who collected a certificate for Sports, Arts & Leisure Activities said:
“I am very happy to be here, I’ve made some new friends, went on stage and had a good time.”
