Every week: nutritious and affordable food
Every week, The Bread-and-Butter Thing mobile food clubs provide access to nutritious and affordable food, bringing essential produce into communities that are starved of money, food, and resources. This low-cost weekly shop offers fresh fruit and vegetables, fridge favourites, and cupboard staples, aiming to:
- Improve diets with a diverse variety of healthy produce and products.
- Diminish loneliness and reduce the stress of stretched finances.
- Work with communities to manage the distribution of food, building friendships, skills, and connections.
- Listen and learn, building understanding of the issues facing members, giving voice to their stories, and affecting change at local and national levels.

Supporting communities across Kirklees
Our Community Connectors have supported The Bread-and-Butter Thing since the scheme started, aiding various communities across Kirklees. Currently, we visit:
- Cowlersley Community Support – Tuesday 14:00-14:30
- Chickenley Community Hub – Tuesday 13:30-14:00
- Heckmondwike United Reformed Church – Monday 14:00-14:30
- Thornhill Lees Community Centre – Tuesday 14:00-14:30
- Rawthorpe and Dalton Library – Monday 14:00-14:30
- The Chestnut Centre- Friday 13:30-14:00
- Berry Brow – Wednesday 14:00-14:30
- Crosland Moor – Thursday 13:30-14:00

Meet Leah
One of the success stories of true collaboration is Leah, who was introduced to Community Plus by her Employment Coach at REAL Employment. Working with Community Connector Joy Cummings-Douglas, they explored Leah’s passion for food, despite her sight impairment limiting her access.
Joy built a strong relationship with the local mobile food club at Cowlersley and invited Leah to try it out. Initially accompanying Leah, Joy introduced her to the other volunteers. Leah quickly adapted to the role, packing over 80 bags a week to support local families. Leah’s involvement has been a source of joy and purpose, helping her support the community she loves.
REAL Employment
Leah’s confidence has grown since meeting Joy, and this support, alongside REAL Employment, will help her develop the skills to secure paid employment. REAL Employment aims to support adults aged 18+ with learning disabilities, autism, and/or additional needs into paid, sustainable employment. They match interests and skills to suitable jobs. Employers can benefit from REAL Employment’s services, including:
- Matching skills to volunteering and job opportunities
- Writing CVs
- Preparing for interviews
- Training
- Providing support when working
