Our ambitious plans to build a new school in Kirklees for pupils with complex autism have taken a key step forward.
Kirklees Council is funding the work to rebuild and relocate Woodley School and College, which caters for autistic pupils aged from 5 to 19.
Woodley is currently based at Dog Kennel Bank in Huddersfield, operating from multiple buildings. Additional teaching spaces have been added over time, but further developments are restricted due to the site.
The school will be moving to Fernside Avenue, Almondbury, and will expand to around 180 places. It will enjoy superb facilities, an improved environment and will mean more pupils with additional needs can be educated within Kirklees.
Now, in the next stage of the project, work has started to clear existing buildings from the Fernside Avenue site – paving the way for the new school to be built. The demolition and associated works are being carried out by DSM Demolition.
Creating a state-of-the-art home for Woodley is part of the council’s work to improve children’s outcomes and transform support for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Cllr Jane Rylah, Cabinet member for Education, said:

“Woodley already provides excellent standards of support and education, but the new facilities in Almondbury will further enhance their offer and make a huge difference for autistic pupils.
“We’re working closely with Woodley to ensure their children and young people, along with staff and families, will experience the best possible, tailor-made environment.
“We want all of our children to thrive, achieve great outcomes and fulfil their potential. The new Woodley will have an enormous, positive impact on many lives – and for many years to come.”
Investment in Woodley School and College is just one part of the wider work to transform SEND support in Kirklees. There is a similar project to rebuild and relocate Joseph Norton Academy, which is for pupils with Social Emotional and Mental Health needs, while extra places are being created at several schools for pupils with additional needs.
