The Deputy Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Munir Ahmed, received the first poppy in Huddersfield as the Royal British Legion launched its 2025 Remembrance campaign.
Communities across Kirklees will come together on Remembrance Sunday, 9 November, and Armistice Day, Tuesday 11 November, to honour those who have given their lives in wars and conflicts.
Cllr Munir Ahmed, Deputy Mayor of Kirklees:
“It’s an honour to receive the first poppy of the Poppy Appeal launch and recognise the huge contribution made by so many service personnel and their families, those currently serving and those who have served throughout the decades.
“The Poppy Appeal is such an important part of recognising their contribution, in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.”
Cllr Liz Smaje, Mayor of Kirklees:
“I’m tremendously disappointed to miss the Poppy Appeal launch due to illness, and miss the opportunity to mark such a symbolic occasion as we head toward Remembrance Sunday. Unfortunately, this was unavoidable, but my thoughts today are with all those who served, and continue to serve in our armed forces, and the families who support them.
“The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest annual fundraising campaign, held each year during the Remembrance period.
“As we wear our poppies, let us reflect on the sacrifices made and the lives lost.
“The poppy is also a symbol of our ongoing commitment to support veterans and their families.
“Your generosity helps ensure their legacy lives on and enables the Royal British Legion to continue providing vital services, medical care, and support to those who have given so much for our freedom.”
80th Anniversary of the End of the Second World War
2025 marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War, a global conflict that shaped the modern world. This year, we commemorate the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who served and those who lived through the war.
Victory in Europe (VE) Day, celebrated on 8 May 1945, marked the end of fighting in Europe. It was a moment of relief and reflection as communities across the UK rejoiced in peace after years of hardship.
Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, observed on 15 August 1945, signified the end of the war in the Pacific and the official conclusion of the Second World War. We remember the contributions of the “forgotten army” and those who served in the Far East.
These anniversaries remind us of the enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom and the importance of peace in our time.
