We’re thrilled to announce the launch of a pilot service featuring eight in-house minibuses for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
The new minibuses transport eligible pupils from their home to their place of education – and they proudly boast a design created by Roxie Finlay-Martin, a pupil at Royds Hall School.
By introducing its own fleet of vehicles, the council is strengthening its commitment to providing high-quality, reliable and cost-effective transport for pupils with SEND.
Operating alongside existing transport providers, the new initiative means children and families can enjoy more consistency and familiarity in their school transport arrangements, helping to ensure the best experience.
To celebrate the introduction of the new fleet, pupils from local schools were invited to create a bright, bold and positive graphic that reflects their unique voices and artistic flair.
The challenge was a chance for SEND learners to contribute directly to a real-world project and be celebrated in their local community.
The winning design – crafted by 13-year-old Roxie – now adorns the vehicles, which are already carrying children around the district. Roxie was presented with an art set and framed photo of her design in a ceremony at her school.
Roxie said:
“When I started my design I wanted to show that we are stronger together and celebrate the differences that students may have. I wanted to give everyone who got on the bus a sense of belonging.
“I couldn’t believe it when I was told I had won. The first time I saw the bus drive by, I thought it looked amazing!”
Cllr Jane Rylah, Cabinet Member for Education, said:
“By investing in the new minibus fleet, we can provide more stable routes, consistent drivers and greater peace of mind for families.
“This marks a major step forward in delivering a more reliable, cost-effective and council-run transport service for pupils with additional needs. The better the transport service, the more settled our children can feel – and that will support them in achieving the best possible outcomes.”
Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:
“We’re really excited to see the creativity and talent of our SEND pupils celebrated in such a meaningful way.
“This project is not only a chance for artistic expression, it also promotes inclusivity and showcases the incredible talents of learners to the wider community. Roxie’s design is lovely, so I’m delighted to see it brought to life in this way.”
Supporting children and young people with SEND, and their families, is a priority for Kirklees Council. A huge amount of work takes place to provide high-quality services and the council is currently investing in the multi-million pound rebuild of two special schools.
The new minibus fleet will be monitored for reliability and customer satisfaction, with a view to expanding the fleet further.
