It’s a special year for four of Kirklees Council’s loyal lollipop ladies or school crossing patrol officers to give them their official titles, who have dedicated over 120 years of service, helping 1000’s of children and families safely cross the road.
Angela Smithson from Shaw Cross Junior and Infants school, Susan Bennet from Netherhall Learning Campus and Mary Thomas from Christ Church Academy are all celebrating 30 years and Heather Day from St. Patrick’s Catholic Primary School is celebrating 31 years in service with Kirklees Council.
During their years of service, there have been nine UK Prime Ministers, UK athletes have won 309 Olympic gold medals, the first iPhone was launched and Huddersfield Town made history by reaching the Premier League!
Mary Thomas, who is retiring from her role in December said:
“Over the last 30 years or so, I have loved seeing the children and helping them cross the road safely. Some of those children are now all grown up and they bring their own little ones into school, which has been a joy to see.
“Even though I will miss the job, I won’t miss the early mornings, especially at this time of the year! As I retire, I’m looking forward to helping my own kids and spending even more precious time with my seven children.”
Councillor Tyler Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Highways said:
“The outstanding service and unwavering commitment shown by these remarkable women deserves the highest commendation.
“Through rain, shine, and everything the Great British weather can deliver, their dedication to our communities has been a constant—guiding generations safely across our roads.
“On behalf of Kirklees, I extend heartfelt thanks to all our School Crossing Patrol Officers for their tireless efforts in making our roads safer for everyone.”
Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Eizabeth Smaje said:
“On behalf of generations of school children, I want to extend my gratitude to our School Crossing Patrol Officers, and in particular Angela, Susan, Mary and Heather who have dedicated their time to youngsters and their families, assuring them of safe passage to and from school whatever the weather! And to Mary, I wish you all the very best in your retirement.”
