Our Cultural Heart weaves Huddersfield’s textile heritage into its future

Our Cultural Heart

A new public square inspired by our proud weaving past

We’re bringing a piece of Kirklees’ textile legacy right into the centre of Huddersfield. As part of Our Cultural Heart, the new public square will feature paving patterns inspired by the district’s celebrated weaving and textile industry.

Designs such as Madras, Glen Check and Tattersall – all rooted in our world-class cloth-making heritage – will influence the textured brick paving at the heart of the development.

‘Made in Huddersfield’: a mark of quality

The spark for this idea came during a visit to Jacob Brian Tailors at the Old Dye Works in Paddock. Their internationally recognised ‘Made in Huddersfield’ selvedge is a badge of craftsmanship, and we’re building it into the design of the square to honour our global reputation for textiles.

Designed to feel like Huddersfield

The public square, created by award-winning landscape architects re-form, will open in 2026 as part of Phase One of the project. This phase also includes a brand-new food hall in the former Queensgate Market and a modern community library hub.

Textiles sit at the heart of our history, so weaving that identity into the design felt essential. We’re aiming for a place that looks modern, feels meaningful and gives people a genuine connection to their town centre.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, said:

“Our Cultural Heart isn’t just about creating attractive spaces. It’s about creating opportunities for our communities and driving the local economy. Blending heritage with modern design helps us build a town centre where people can thrive and feel real ownership and pride.”

Guy Denton, Director at re-form Landscape Architects, added:

“Our goal is to create a public realm that feels authentic to Huddersfield. Drawing on the region’s textile story allows us to embed heritage into the landscape in a way people can connect with for decades to come.”

Mike Harvey, Managing Director of Jacob Brian Tailors, said:

“Bringing patterns like Madras, Glen Check and Tattersall into the square gives the project real authenticity. Celebrating heritage isn’t about looking back, it’s about pride, belonging and shaping the future.”

What’s next for Our Cultural Heart

Future phases will transform the former library building on Princess Alexandra Walk into a major new museum and art gallery. A large family-friendly urban park will sit alongside it. Both the museum and park have been designed to complement the square and food hall, creating a connected, welcoming destination for everyone. We’re working with a specialist regeneration team including BAM, Turner & Townsend, FCBStudios, Arup and re-form to bring the full scheme to life.
