This week is Electrical Fire Safety Week, which highlights the importance of making sure electrical appliances, fittings, and wiring are in good working condition and working properly. We want to highlight some of the work we have been doing and have put together some useful tips.
Upgrading emergency lighting
To ensure your safety and to make sure we meet the latest regulations, we have been upgrading the emergency lighting in some of our properties. We are carrying out these upgrades to make sure the emergency lighting locations provide sufficient light levels to escape in an emergency.
Our electricians have been on site installing all the relevant fittings for the lighting, including a steel tubing system used to protect the electrical wiring. Without this in place, there would be a risk of the cables falling in the event of a fire, which could cause issues for people escaping or fire teams entering the building.
Handy tips on electrical safety
- Keep any wiring, fittings, or appliances away from water.
- Always unplug appliances and turn off switches before cleaning them.
- Unplug safely by holding the plug and not pulling the wire.
- Do not overload plug sockets; this is a fire risk.
- Do not plug extension leads into other extension leads.
- Keep wires tidy to prevent damage and tripping hazards; do not wrap them tightly.
If you notice any of your electric sockets, switches, or wires are hot, buzzing, or smell like they are burning, report it now.
